Message:

As your constituent, I am writing in support of the Correctional Facility Disaster Preparedness Act (S.2592), which was re-introduced by Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) in August 2021. The havoc wreaked by the COVID-19 pandemic and evident lack of preparedness for such an event has drawn attention to our need to implement such legislation. Correctional facilities in America have been impacted time and time again by all types of natural and human-made disasters. Oftentimes, these disasters have been mismanaged, largely due to the lack of federal laws dictating disaster preparedness protocols in correctional facilities. Consequently, lives have been lost, people gone unaccounted for, and property severely damaged. This is unacceptable, especially because correctional facilities have a constitutional obligation to protect the rights and safety of those within their walls.<br><br>The individuals living and working within correctional facilities deserve to be protected by proactive disaster preparedness protocols. S.2592 will do so by requiring the Federal Bureau of Prisons to submit an annual summary report recording its ability to “uphold the health, safety, and civil rights of the correctional population” among facilities impacted by disasters. It will also make amendments to the National Institute of Corrections’ Advisory Board to ensure its effectiveness in implementing these measures.<br><br>Please see this expanded letter for further details and resources relevant to this issue: https://jlusa.org/s2592/
